2005 turned out to be an important year for Ikon both nationally and internationally. The highlights include, • Two successful Ikon services in Nashville, one of which featured on a PBS programme about church in the 21st century • Two powerful and provocative services in Greenbelt (which can be seen at http://www.smallfire.org/ikon_queer.html and http://www.smallfire.org/ikon_father.html. The services were described by Church times as 'wonderful' and have led to Greenbelt inviting us to submit a proposal for taking the main communion in 2006 (from 50 people in the Menagerie to 15,000 people in a field!) • The recording and launch of 'Dubh' a beautiful and haunting CD that captures a taste of the music used in Ikon services (once described as sounding like the result of Massive Attack meeting Meister Eckhart in a Belfast Pub) • The securing of a book contract in the UK and US that features an exploration of 10 ikon services • The recognition of Ikon as one of the leading 50 expressions of the new wave of liturgical communities emerging in the Western World (see Eddie Gibbs and Ryan Bolger's recent book Emerging Churches)

The theme for ikon this year is based around the idea of belonging. The first service will be taking place on Sunday 29th January in Whites Tavern at 20:00 and is focusing on the idea of unity amidst difference.

Ikon got back from Nashville at the end of May after offering two services at an emergent conference. Everything went really well and we made some great friends. To see the reviews just type ‘Ikon’ and ‘Nashville’ into a search engine.

The Mystery of God: Christian Mysticism and the Celtic Way, 18-20th March, 2005, Atticall, Co. Down, Northern Ireland

The paradox of living in the hustle and bustle of life while yearning for peace and 'centeredness' is something we all struggle with. How can you be a catalyst in your area if your life isn't built on counter-cultural principles/practices and the refreshing Source of life? How can you counter soul-draining aspects of contemporary culture if you are planted firmly within it? In other words, how can you be a mystic and exist in the now? A few individuals from Dreamers of the Day and Ikon are collaborating to provide some space for us to chill out and encounter something of the spirit required to live life to the full.

We're gathering some friends old and new in the beautiful setting of the Cnocnafeola Centre located in the serene village of Atticall, Co. Down. We'll spend some time in reflection, discussion and practice. Dr. Pete Rollins, Shane Tucker, Dr. David Pinder and friends will facilitate us in thinking about mysticism and our lives today; there will be talks, film screenings, liturgies, art workshops, spiritual exercises from Meister Eckhart and others, a little bit of walking, and we'll even spend some time in the company of key mystical proponents of our time.

The event will be a mixture of self-catering and prepared home-cooked meals which will allow for lots of time to socialize and simply to enjoy each other's company. Breakfasts will be self-catered [let us know your preferences - inclusive of cost] but lunches and Sat. night dinner will be catered. No tea will be provided Friday night, but a supper will be available. Numbers are limited to 20 and most of the accommodation will be bunk rooms with limited double room accommodation [upon request - married couples first refusal]. Food can be purchased just a short distance down the road in Atticall. So...a weekend of communal delight, rural reflection, great food and the wisdom of the ages, for less than the price of a meal for two at one of those classy restaurants that none of us ever go to - what could be better?

Marks of the Emerging Church, Study Day, 12th March

What is the emerging church? Is it a neo-evangelical and/or neo-catholic sociological strategy, designed to address the decline in church attendance, or is it a radical re-envisaging of faith that communicates a vital message of transformation to the wider church? In other words, will this fragile, fractured movement be one day remembered, if it is remembered at all, as a re-imagining of the ‘body of Christ’ as community for a post-modern context? Pete Rollins will be exploring how the movement popularly known as 'emerging church' presents a singular, unprecedented opportunity to transform the theological and moral architecture of the Christian community.
